1. Determination of sample size
The sample particle size includes the feed particle size and the discharge particle size. The feed particle size refers to the particle size of the sample when it is loaded into the tank before grinding, and the discharge particle size refers to the average particle size of the sample after grinding. Generally, D50 (median diameter) is taken, that is, the particle size reached by 50% of the sample. It should be noted that the sample feeding should be controlled below 10mm, and the friability sample (such as soil) should be controlled below 15mm. In addition, the external shape of the sample is also one of the factors affecting the grinding effect. For example, it is better to grind the needle shaped sample into segments with scissors.

2. Determine the amount of sample to be ground for one experiment
The sample quantity refers to the quantity needed for an experiment. Since the sample volume is based on the volume of the ball mill tank (generally one-third to two-thirds of the volume of the ball mill tank), and the density of various samples is different, the weight of samples of the same volume is also different, so it is better to calculate the sample volume by volume. In addition, the planetary ball mill can operate two or four ball milling tanks at the same time, and the sample grinding repeatability is good, so the sample can be dispersed in four ball milling tanks for grinding, according to which the ball milling tank with appropriate volume can be selected to help determine the model.

3. Determine sample characteristics and relevant grinding conditions
The characteristics of samples can be considered in terms of hardness, toughness, viscosity, water content, temperature effect, etc., while the grinding conditions can be considered in terms of dry grinding or wet grinding, normal temperature or low temperature, whether pollution is a concern, whether vacuum pumping is required, etc.

4. Determine the source and subsequent use of samples
The source of samples can be divided into self-made, collected and submitted for inspection, which will affect the selection of supporting tools for planetary ball mill and facilitate the processing of samples. The purpose of the samples after grinding can be divided into two categories: one is to prepare raw materials for synthesizing other substances, and the other is to detect and analyze their internal components.
